Supernatural Autoethnography

I started watching Supernatural, as I have many other shows, when I was home alone sick.  I remember being bundled up in the living room trying to find something interesting to watch.

TBS had their Morning Supernatural Marathon and they were halfway through Season 1 Episode 19 “Provenance” and it caught my attention so hard I recorded every episode I could find. The first season I’ve watched weekly as new was Season 4 and who could forget their first time meeting Castiel.

Now about eight years later I have watched Supernatural multiple times through Netflix. I enjoy rewatching an episode and trying to find something I miss I missed/ I preferred to watch the whole season at once when it was on Netflix.  Though binge watching does have its negative effects, especially if you doze off then wake up on a completely different episode.

My biggest expectation for the show is and has always been the essence of “family”. No matter what’s happening or what has changed family is always a constant.  It was one of the first things that grabbed my attention when I started watching it and to this day it's one of the main things I look for in an episode.

No matter what’s trying to tear them apart they are always brothers and that's all that matters.  Through demon blood addictions, dying (multiple times), apocalypses, and meddling angels Sam and Dean will always find each other and always stick together.

Of course their relationship isn’t perfect.  This show has had a very strong grasp on the intricacies of a sibling bond as well as the dynamics between a dysfunctional family from the beginning.

Even as the show progressed and their family grew beyond blood, it showcases a whole new side of family that only makes me fall into the show even more.  When Cas became a more integral part of the Winchesters' lives, that attitude Sam and Dean had towards each other expanded to include that adorable little angel in a trench coat.
Family has always been important to me and the development of Sam and Dean through family, both related and chosen was something that I cherished very much.

Unfortunately I'm really bad at keeping up with the series weekly on CW.  I'll start off watching all the episodes fine but then I'd miss a week or two and have no motivation to pick up again.  I don't want anything spoiled for me.  However this means that I have a much longer "wait" between seasons.  That's never any fun.

Long story short, Supernatural is a show that is near and dear to my heart.  I've been a part of this fandom for years and I feel I've matured along with the show.  Just like Harry Potter molded my childhood, Supernatural molded my teenage and now adult life.  No matter what new show catches my interest I will always come back to this show.
